Fauna of Insect Pests and their Natural Enemies from Eleutherococcus senticossus (Rupr. & Maxim.) and E. sessiliflorus (Rupr. & Maxim.)

Abstract

A survey was conducted on general insects, pests, and natural enemy insects occurring on two medicinal plants in Korea, Eleutherococcus senticosus and E. sessiliflorus. The survey was carried out from May 9 to October 10, 2024 in cultivation areas located in Taean-gun and Asan-si, Chungcheongnam-do. The study revealed that among the insects visiting these plants, species belonging to the order Hemiptera exhibited the highest diversity. When pest taxa were classified by functional groups, E. sessiliflorus showed the highest diversity of phytophagous pests (17 species), while E. senticosus had the highest diversity of sap-sucking pests (18 species). In both cultivation areas, pests belonging to the orders Hemiptera and Coleoptera were the most diverse, accounting for 20 species across four orders (51.3%). Regarding natural enemies, the E. sessiliflorus cultivation area had 14 species from five orders, with Hymenoptera (6 species) being the most diverse. Similarly, in the E. senticosus cultivation area, 12 species from three orders were recorded, with Hymenoptera (6 species) being relatively more diverse than other orders. Additionally, the study provides a detailed list of pest species observed and ecological photographs of major pests and natural enemies.
