Morphology and Germination Characteristics of Seeds in Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) Accessions

Abstract

This study provides basic information on jujube accessions and aims to improve the efficiency of breeding by investigating the stone morphological traits of jujube accessions held by the Jujube Research Institute of the Chungcheongbuk-do Agricultural Research & Extension. Additionally, the study examines germination characteristics by seed storage methods and scarification treatments. The percentage of kernel of the main domestic cultivars, ‘Bokjo’ and ‘Cheonhwang’, were very low at 1% and 0%, respectively. In contrast, the percentage of kernel of five accessions, including ‘Sanjo’, ‘Ilbon’, ‘Jh-1’, ‘Jh-6’, and ‘Jh-11’, were high, around 80%. Germination was not effective even with ground storage, but scarification of the seeds significantly promoted germination. The highest germination rate was observed when seeds underwent complete scarification, although the rates varied depending on the accession. Partial scarification also showed improved germination compared to the untreated seeds. Correlation analysis indicated that accessions with a lower stone morphological index and stone shape closer to a round tended to have higher germination rates and percentage of kernel. Therefore, stone morphological traits alone could be useful for selecting high percentage of kernel accessions and for breeding new cultivars through crossbreeding.
